CRCT Workshop for Parents

Griffin Middle School announces a special Workshop for Parents.  Please join us on Tueday, March 29 from 6:00 - 7:00pm in the Griffin Media Center as we present information concerning the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT).

Topics will include:

• What is the CRCT?
• What does the CRCT measure?
• How are scores used?
• How can parents help their children prepare for the test?
• Test-taking strategies
• Related resources

Attendance

Did you know that attendance is one of the most influential factors in student achievement?  It is such a big influence that attendance is the second indicator (only behind test scores) that determine if middle schools make Adequate Yearly Progress. When students are out they not only miss instruction themselves, but they need additional teacher time for makeup help when they return.  That hurts everyone. We constantly track attendance data and have become concerned about the number of student absences. When students are sick they need to stay at home to recover and prevent the spread of illness. However, when students are well, they need to be in school, on time, on a consistent basis. With the advent of spring, busy schedules and late nights it is important for parents to make regular, timely school attendance a priority. We want to make the best use of every minute for every child!

GLRS Announces Summer Programs

Georgia Learning Resource System (GLRS) has released its 2011 Special Needs Directory for summer activities.  During the summer months many parents want to find recreational or camp programs for their children. Sometimes it can be especially hard to find programs that accept children with disabilities or programs that are specifically designed for these youngsters. The purpose of this Directory is to help parents, educators, and other interested citizens in the Metro Atlanta area find such programs.

The Directory presents information on day camps, residential camps, school camps and various recreational and instructional programs that accept youngsters with disabilities. Most programs listed are located in Georgia. A few camps outside the State of Georgia that are specifically designed to accommodate the needs of children with disabilities are listed. Many fine programs serving youngsters with disabilities have, no doubt, been unintentionally omitted due to our lack of knowledge of these programs.

Kids Think It's Fun

Over the past few weeks Griffin has seen an increase in the number of students in class and in the halls chewing gum and eating candy.  Not only is this against school rules (see Student Handbook, pgs 11 & 12) it is a mess to clean up and causes disruptions in class.  In addition, some students have been seen 'Smoking Smarties' during lunch.  This practice can be very dangerous.  The Wall Street Journal recently posted an article about this practice ( http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123750945477390601.html ).

In order to address this issue staff members have been asked to have any student caught with gum or candy to throw it away immediately.  We are also asking for support from home in not allowing students to bring gum or candy to school.  Working together we can help cut down on a growing distraction here at school and discourgage kids from participating in a very dangerous activity.

March Madness Kicks Off at Griffin

  

During the month of March, Griffin Middle School will be offering a “March Madness” CRCT Prep Saturday School.  The purpose of this Saturday School is to engage students in activities that will help improve their math and reading skills.  Our goal is to address areas of weakness by providing opportunities that include small group instruction and interactive remedial technology.  Saturday, March 5 kicked off the event with over 150 students attending.  For more information parents may contact their grade-level administrator.
