Griffin Middle School was recently recognized by State Superintendent Dr. John Barge and members of the State Board of Education as one of Georgia’s eleven state directed schools that was able to come off the Needs Improvement list in 2010. This honor was the result of many years of hard work and continued increases in student achievement that resulted in Griffin making Adequate Yearly Progress for the 2008 – 2009 and the 2009 – 2010 school years. During those two years, Griffin not only made AYP but also doubled the percentage of students who exceeded standards on the math portion of the CRCT.
Griffin principal Darryl York said, “Griffin Middle School was able to make AYP for two consecutive years because each of the essential pieces of the puzzle came together. Through the cooperative work and support of our district, GaDoE, and our faculty and staff, we were able to create a laser focus on our specific areas of need. This teamwork approach allowed us to do more than any one group could have done alone.”
Joining Mr. York and Griffin Teacher of the Year Mr. Cedric Rumph were GaDoE State Director Dr. Carolyn Anderson and GaDoE School Improvement Specialist Melba Fugitt. There to honor Griffin were State Superintendant Dr. John Barge (a Griffin Middle School alumni) and State Board of Education member Dr. Mary Sue Murray.
