The Student Leadership Team is comprised of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who have been elected by their peers to assume roles of positive leadership at Griffin Middle School. The group meets after school every other Thursday to work on projects to improve the learning environment of GMS. Acting as more than a student council, the team not only brings school issues to the attention of the principal, but also the team is active in the community, representing Griffin Middle School in several service programs. The criteria for being in and staying in the SLT are as follows: maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average, no office referrals, no N’s or U’s in conduct, three teacher recommendations, parental permission, an interview with the sponsor, and giving a speech to their respective student body. These students represent the best of Griffin as they plan to become our future leaders.
The SLT participates in the following activities during each academic school year: planning, writing, and performing skits at grade level meetings, acting as ambassadors at GMS events, coordinating teacher recognition awards, presenting character education themes at the Smyrna city council, cleaning the school grounds, planning and supervising PAWS activities, visiting feeder elementary schools to assist in transition for students from 5th to 6th grade, and participating in various community service activities (Relay for Life, Hurricane Relief, Muscular Dystrophy, Pennies for Leukemia, etc.).
