I haven't posted in months

Yes, yes, I know. After being sick, I did a pathetic job in keeping up with you all on this site. May I ask for forgiveness? With this said, I have attached a copy of the final exam study guide for use. Many of the information on this exam are basics that you need to know.

I wish you all the best and hope you have a fantastic summer: Download final_review.doc

Summer, Summer, Summer Time!!!

The new look made it!

I thought that black background was difficult to see and the stripe one that the provider put up by accident was awful. We are now at good old Griffin Wildcat colors.

I apologize for not keeping up lately, but as you all know, I have been quite ill with this bug and strep throat to boot. Ms. Ford has done a great job keeping all of you on track and helping with 6th period. She and I will be sitting down Tuesday and discussing our direction from here. We are very much on track to finish this unit on time and I thank you for your efforts in keeping the pace.

Lastly, if you have any make-up or retake work, Ms. Ford and I will be sitting down with each of you and going over an up-to-date progress report for the class. Many of you had lower scores than you expected on midterm progress and that is because of the completion work and graded classwork now being in two separate categories. If you don't turn either in, you are out 20% of your grade.

Reminder - All classes will have a Vocabulary Usage Quiz for Unit VII on Thursday, February 21. And of course, don't forget that you have no school on Monday the 19th and Tuesday the 20th.

A New Look is Comin'

Howdy to everyone. I am in the process of changing the look of the blog. Thus, over the next few posts, you may see some different backgrounds. This one is definitely not it! It is UGLY!!!

Not much to say today except that all of you need to make sure you finish reading the People Stories that I handed out today. 3rd, 5th, and 6th will be doing group presentations on Monday. 4th period will have a discussion over the stories and what you learned, how you think the people felt, and what thoughts and feelings the stories of these people's lives in conflicts throughout Africa come to you.

All classes were suppose to have turned in Starter Activity Sheets for this week. I still have a number of you who are not doing them. Ladies and gents, these are easy grades, but I can't sit on top of you every day. It is going to take your determination.

All grades to this point will be on the upcoming Progress Reports for next week. For those of you who did not finish your retake or make-up exam today, the grade received on the first test will be the one that shows in the calculations for this Progress Report.

Reminder - All classes will have a Vocabulary Quiz on Tuesday, February 12 and Progress Reports will be sent home on Wednesday, February 13.

We Start Unit 7 on February 7

First off, let's all congratulate Kathrene from 6th Period for being the February Social Studies Student of the Month. Every month you all have a chance, so work hard and soon you may see your name at the top of the page!

Today was an introductory day to key terms and concepts in all classes. 3rd, 4th, and 5th completed Vocabulary and reviewed the terms. Completion of the terms will count as a quiz grade. These key terms are extremely important in establishing a foundation for the rest of this unit.

6th period were expected to hand in the essay from yesterday and worked on Vocabulary and completing sentences that show an understanding of the meaning and proper use of the words. Students are expected to have these sentences ready to be checked tomorrow. We checked the proper definitions of terms and discussed the significance and importance of several to the new unit.

Attached below are the Georgia Performance Standards and general expectations we will be working on during Unit VII - Governments and Economics in Africa.

Progress Reports will be sent home next Wednesday, February 13. If you have any make-ups or retakes, please make sure you have these completed by Friday of this week. If not, the original grades will show on your Progress Reports.

As soon as I finish this post, I will be updating grades. All grades should be accurate and complete by tomorrow evening.

Reminder: Progress Reports to be sent home on Wednesday, February 13. All make-ups and retakes must be completed by Friday, February 8, to show on this Progress Report. All classes will have a Vocabulary Quiz on Tuesday, February 12.

The halls were quiet this afternoon!

I hope all enjoyed the extra time on this early release day. The day ended up to be nice out and I each of you should have taken some time to enjoy it.

As you know, all periods completed the Unit VI - 20th Century Africa Test today. Retakes will be available starting on Friday. Hopefully, no one will need to do so.

3rd, 4th, and 5th worked on vocabulary for Unit VII. Half of the vocab should be completed for tomorrow. No, not all of it is in the book. Use a dictionary or one of the many available on-line.

6th Period students need to make sure that the essay question is completed and turned in tomorrow. If you need more details, please see yesterday's post on this blog.

Progress Reports will be sent home next week. If you have any make-ups or retakes, please make sure you have these completed by Friday of this week. If not, the original grades will show on your Progress Reports.

I am having trouble with I-Parent at home again tonight. If I do not have the grades in tonight, they will be in by noon tomorrow. Thanks for your patience.

Don't forget, this is the last week for the 4 1/2 week Progress Report. We will be giving those out next week.

Reminder: Progress Reports to be sent home next week!

Tomorrow, Tomorrow, We Have a Test, Tomorrow!

OK all, things got a little behind, but we have our Unit VI test tomorrow. Attached to this email is both the study guide and the answers. Please make sure you take the time to study and be ready for this one.

6th Period - You have an additional short essay to write on the Nigeria Today" chapter in the textbook from pages 536-539. As I mentioned, those who check the blog are getting the essay question early. You will be able to use your book as a reference, but take this opportunity to lay out the essay in advance. The question is: "What relationship exists between Nigerian society and history and its art and literature?" This is a synthesis type of question in which you write your own thoughts, but provide evidence to back these up through examples from the reading.

Also, grades will be updated by tomorrow on I-Parent. I apologize for getting behind, but I will definitely have everything, including the test grade in, tomorrow evening.

Don't forget, this is the last week for the 4 1/2 week Progress Report. We will be giving those out next week.

It's Friday! It's Friday! It's Friday! It's Friday!

Oh yeah, it's Friday - if you hadn't heard! I hope all of you have a good weekend.

3rd, 4th, and 5th periods worked on the Health issues of 20th Century Africa. 3rd finished reviewing the questions from South Africa and Apartheid and finished part of the PowerPoint. 4th and 5th periods finished the PowerPoint and will complete the question review on Monday. All classes will review for Tuesday's test on Monday. We will complete the study guide as a group, but you need to study at home. Forty-five minutes in class is not enough to be prepared. Included below is a download to the Health Issues PowerPoint and the coordinating worksheet. Malaria_and_other_health_issues_ppt.ppt and Download african_health_issues_ppt_wksht.doc.

Most of 6th Period went to the STARS Party and were not in class today. The African Culture handout is still expected to be finished for Monday. If you missed class, you need to complete the assignment as homework over the weekend. We will discuss the handout briefly on Monday. It will be checked for completion. Also, I will be putting a study guide up over the weekend that you may get an early start on. However, we will discuss it in class. Please prepare for the test on Tuesday. This has been a long unit with a diverse mixture of information. One class period of preparation will not do it!

If you refrain! We might retain!

OK, another day down for the week. However, a number of groups did not turn in a South Africa Timeline Project and as I finish my backlog of Starter Activity sheets, I find the same thing. As the title for today states, If you refrain (from schoolwork) we might retain! That means you get to spend another fun-filled year with us in seventh grade. No threat intended, but we can urge you along, but can't do work for you.

Today in 3rd, 4th, and 5th periods we finished the Images of Apartheid in South Africa assignment. Also in 3rd ,4th, and 5th, we discussed the six vocab words that were added. Actually, we need to finish this part in 3rd. Don't forget to turn the project in. It may be a day or two late, but late points off are better than a zero. Here are the links to the two pictures we used for the Images assignment:

http://www.south-africa-tours-and-travel.com/images/apartheid-signboard-on-durban-beach-historyofsouthafrica.jpg and http://supernatural.blogs.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/03/21/apartheid.jpg

Sixth period students who did not complete the Images of Apartheid in South Africa assignment from yesterday were suppose to turn this in today. I still have some missing. In class today, we discussed segregation and its form in the United States throughout the 1900s and then made some comparisons with the apartheid system we are studying in South Africa. Students were given a question sheet and should have these ready to be checked and discussed in class tomorrow. The following link are the questions: Download social_and_political_in_south_africa.ppt

We survived conferences! Back to the grind!

Okay everybody, here is where we stand. The South Africa Timeline project must be turned in tomorrow, Wednesday, January 30. Many of the groups have finished and turned them in. If you haven't, get on the ball and have it ready. Remember this is a project grade.

All classes were given a vocabulary sheet today. These terms and sentences must be completed as homework tonight. Sixth period has moved on to the Apartheid Picture Project and should have finished in class today. If you didn't finish this project, you will need to turn in tomorrow.

3rd, 4th and 5th will complete the Apartheid Picture Project tomorrow.

See the Reminder section below for important dates coming up. I'll talk to you again next time.

Reminder: South Africa Timeline Project - due Wednesday, January 30, Apartheid Picture Project is due on Thursday, January 31 (6th) and Friday, February 1 (3rd, 4th, 5th), Review Quiz for all classes on Friday, February 1, and Unit VI Exam on Tuesday, February 5.

Work, Work, Work!

Alright classes, we are all at a different point for the first time this year. With conference week, each class has been a little different due to time-frame. The big thing, however, is all classes have a vocabulary quiz tomorrow. We have gone through all the words, spent time discussing their meanings and tried to provide examples. Please remember, this quiz is not just a definition and a word. This quiz will provide examples, scenarios, and phrases that if you know the definitions, you will have no trouble understanding which term fits into the question. This type of thinking will be seen much more throughout this semester in preparation for CRCT and in developing a higher level of thinking skills.

Tomorrow, 3rd-5th periods will need to complete the time-line portion of the project. Questions will need to be completed over the weekend for homework and added to the project on Monday.

6th Period will be expected to have the South African History Time-line Project finished on Friday.

Reminder: Vocabulary Quiz on Friday, January 25.
