7th Grade just finished studying about Romare Bearden, a well known collage artist.  After discussing what social and political statements were, students had to incorporate a social or political statement into their collage... below are some successful collages that deal with pollution, Katrina, the war in Iraq, and the weather.

WATCH OUT-- Grades are coming!

I know that progress reports are going home on Wed., but please don't be shocked about Art grades... the progress reports only reflect the first project-- 6th, 7th, and 8th grades just finished (or will be finishing) their second project this week, so those grades will be in I-Cue, at the end of next week.

My favorite project... and the kids' too!

8th grade is working on a project that centers on Positive and Negative space- the differences between the two and how they interact with each other.  Last week, students created 2-D designs that focused on the Japanese art form of Notan (the balance between light and dark).  Now students are building on their knowledge of positive and negative space and creating abstract sculptures that emphasize both.

This is by far one of my favorite projects, and the students seem to really enjoy it also.  Since my concentration in college was sculpture, I enjoy showing my students that there i more to "sculpture" than ceramics, or clay.  Pictures should be loaded soon, so keep checking back!

Late Grades

I just input grades for 7th and 8th grades' last project-- so grades are up to date now.  I know I said They'd be done by Thursday, but time got away from me.  They are in now.  If students are not happy with their grades then they can work on their projects some more at home and bring them back with the rubric that has their original grade, and I will re-grade their projects.  All make-up work is due by October 5th.

First Projects Done and On We Go

7th and 8th Grades are finished with their first project- which was to make a book that illustrated and defined the Elements and Principles of Art.  Students had one extra day on Monday to finish them up- so grades should be posted by Friday for them (it takes a while to grade 60 books).  Most students did really well, however there were some that still did not finish.  Once I hand back their projects with grades, students are able to continue to work on them at home and bring them back in for re-grading.  All make-up work is due by October 5th.

7th grade's next project is to make a collage with a social or political statement.  We began today learning about symbolism in Romare Bearden's art work and how the Civil Rights Movement was a prevailing theme throughout his work.  We also talked about context clues in art work to figure out what the artist is trying to say.

8th grade's next project is all about SPACE!!  We began today discussing the difference between Positive and Negative space and students began to work on their 2-D Notan designs.  After students master space in the 2-D form, we will move to making sculptures that emphasize space.

Both 7th and 8th grades should expect a pop quiz during these projects.

Teacher Information

Welcome Back!

For those of you who are new to Griffin or new to the art program at Griffin, allow me to introduce myself...Anne1

My name is Anne Aurand and I am a graduate of GA State University where I received a BFA in Art Education.  I am a GA native-- I grew up with my mom and step-dad in Dunwoody, GA.  I was married in July of 2006 and now I live in Vinings with my husband and our two cats, Tungsten and Leela.

I have a passion for art and education, and my program is strongly rooted in the foundations of both.  As long as my students try their hardest, use their time wisely, and follow directions, they will be able to make an "easy A."
